North Texas sheriff commits suicide amid state investigation
A North Texas sheriff was found dead in his home of apparent suicide Monday evening amid a recent investigation looking into claims that he cheated on a training course, according to local media.
The body of Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant was discovered Monday night with self-inflicted gunshot wounds, according to the Stephenville Empire-Tribune.
Bryant held his position since 1997 and won 70 percent of the votes to be re-elected this past March, but had recently been under the scope of the Texas Law Enforcement Commission in October, the local newspaper reported.
Less than a week ago, the paper reported Bryant was being investigated by TCOLE for allegedly cheating on his continuing education training a 40-hour, required course in place to ensure officials are up-to-date with changes to laws, according to the outlet.
