Inmate being sought after escape from Live Oak County jail

A Texas man facing charges of assaulting a game warden is being sought after a weekend escape from jail.

Officials in the town of George West say 36-year-old Jake Russell Childers got out of the local jail about 85 miles south of San Antonio on Saturday.

After a full day of searching on Sunday, George West police hadn't found Childers. But, city officials posted alerts on Facebook warning residents to be careful while Childers was on the loose.

"Please be advised to stay on HIGH ALERT. Keep your homes and vehicles locked. Do not answer your door to strangers. Report any suspicious persons and/or activity. DO NOT attempt to make contact with this individual, CALL 911," city officials posted.

[font color=330099]The jail he escaped from is in the town where I was raised. Another report indicates that they believe the escapee is at a cemetery near Campbellton, Texas (50 miles south of San Antonio). The authorities believe that he stole a pickup truck and several firearms.

This appears to be the second time that Childers escaped from the Live Oak County Jail. There is an article from two months ago in The Progress. In addition, the newspaper gave his residence in Whitsett, Texas which is about 10 miles south of Campbellton.

Search for escaped Live Oak County inmate expands to Atascosa County

ATASCOSA COUNTY, Texas - The search for an escaped Live Oak County inmate expanded Tuesday, three days after he got away.

Jake Childers was able to get away from deputies on his way back to the Live Oak County Criminal Justice Center in George West.

Law enforcement officers spent much of the day Tuesday searching for Childers in an area east of Campbellton near FM 791. The small town is 50 miles south of San Antonio. Searchers honed in on a 100-acre area after someone reported seeing a person matching Childers' description in the area on Monday.

State, local and federal officials are using dogs, horses and aircraft to find their man.

CAMPBELLTON – Live Oak County Sheriff Larry Busby said escaped inmate Jake Russell Childers, who has been on the run since Christmas Eve might have been mortally wounded in a shootout with SWAT officers who had him surrounded at a home east of here.

Busby said that at approximately 9:15 p.m., as lawmen were converging on the home, Childers shot at them. The officers returned fire and now a justice of the peace is en route to the scene.

Earlier today, the sheriff in a press conference said the 36-year-old inmate had attempted to escape Friday, when he got into a fight with four jailers in a recreation room. He allegedly held one of the men hostage and attempted to take his keys. On Saturday, while en route back to the Live Oak County Jail from a medical transport, Childers is believed to have escaped from a patrol vehicle due to a window lock that was not engaged. This touched off a multi-agency manhunt that spanned Live Oak and Atascosa counties.
