San Antonio Southside ISD trustees surrender to state takeover
Southside Independent School District trustees voted 5-2 on Thursday not to fight a state takeover in court, paving the way for Mike Morath, the Texas commissioner of education, to lower the districts accreditation status and appoint a conservator, superintendent and board of managers.
Morath first informed the district of his intended takeover in December. Trustees requested the Texas Education Agency review the decision but were informed Wednesday that it had been upheld.
Trustees had voted in December to sue the TEA if they lost the review, but they went back on that plan Thursday after a closed session. Loren Brewer and Norberto Chavez, who led a board majority until a new faction swept into power two years ago, were the only trustees who voted to continue the fight in court.
We know that this legal action will be very long and very expensive, and this money should be spent on our kids, not on legal actions, Kenneth Bouldin, board vice president, said as he made the motion not to challenge Moraths decisions.
