Refugio restaurateur detained for human smuggling
A Refugio restaurateur charged with human smuggling remained in detention Thursday after he and 16 others were apprehended by federal investigators days before.
"Everybody knew him by eating at his restaurants," said Cindy Carver, a Refugio contractor.
Alfredo Plascencia was detained Tuesday morning when special agents from the Homeland Security Investigations division, a department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, raided two Refugio homes and two restaurants inside the city, according to court documents.
During the ICE raids at two of Plascencia's restaurants, Taqueria Guadalajara and Gumbo Seafood, 18 other people were detained, said Greg Palmore, Department of Homeland Security spokesman.
