State-appointed board president storms out of Marlin ISD meeting

The new governing body over Marlin Independent School District looks to be off to a rocky start after state-appointed board of managers President Maggie Majors stormed out during a public meeting Tuesday.

The special meeting started at 6 p.m. at Marlin’s Junior Academy library. Majors called the meeting into session, declared a quorum and then called for a closed session for the board to discuss renewing contracts for the district’s principals. Seven minutes later, in what seemed to be a moment of frustration, she returned for less than a minute only to give an announcement.

“I’m excusing myself from the meeting. I do not appreciate trickery that’s being used, and Superintendent (Michael) Seabolt has done the most despicable thing,” Majors said. “I’m going home, because I’m upset.”

Majors said she and another manager were about to sign teacher contracts during the closed session when Seabolt told her they had signed the contracts the night before. Marlin ISD held a special meeting Monday night, approving the renewal of Seabolt’s contract, and that was the only item on the agenda.
