Professor sentenced to prison for drug ring involvement

A University of Houston-Victoria professor was sentenced Tuesday to a year in federal prison for his participation in a synthetic marijuana trafficking ring.

Omar Maher Al Nasser, 37, who served as an assistant professor of finance for the university's School of Business Administration, pleaded guilty Dec. 21 to aiding and abetting an unlicensed money transmitting business, according to court documents.

He will also be required to pay a $10,000 fine.

That charge carried a possible punishment of up to five years in prison and $250,000 in fines.

A second charge of conspiracy to commit money laundering was dismissed by a federal judge.
