Drinks at the dentist's office? Texas bill takes aim at boozy trend in medicine

Offering alcoholic beverages to patients as they wait to undergo procedures or while they are learning about a serious health care need is a practice that is both “appalling” and “irresponsible,” Texas legislators said Thursday.

The comments were made before the Senate Committee on Business and Commerce as state representatives reviewed SB 404, a proposed bill introduced by Sen. Lois Kolkhorst (R-Brenham). It would prohibit health care providers from offering alcoholic beverages and penalize them for doing so.

In particular, Kolkhorst pointed to a trend in dentistry cropping up in states like New York and Texas, in which wine, beer and other alcoholic drinks are offered to help calm anxious patients.

"There's nothing in the code that prevents you from doing this, but I think it's a line that we can't cross," said Kolkhorst. This is not a "stunt bill," she added, saying that the unregulated practice can lead to troubling outcomes.

Go ahead and blast away.

The elected officials in my county are all Republicans, my state representative and state senator are Republicans, my U. S. representative and U. S. senators are Republicans, all of my elected officials at the state level are Republicans, and the chief executive is a Republican. It's no wonder that I'm depressed.

He often scheduled our visits for the end of the day.He would mix martinis for whichever parent accompanied us kids. After administering the anesthesic,he would go and drink with my parent(s) and then come back in and finish the procedure. So its not snark when I say drinks are ok in the dentists office as long as the dentist isn't the one doing the drinking. (This was in the '60's.No one thought twice about this).
