Austinites cheer on as palm tree takes root on Mopac

Over the past few months, some Austinites have noticed and are rooting for a small palm tree that is, against all odds, sprouting from the asphalt on MoPac Boulevard.

The tiny tree is just outside the road’s painted lanes, so it survives the hundreds of thousands of cars that drive on MoPac every day.

The next time you’re stuck in MoPac traffic and need to entertain yourself, you can catch it in the left-hand southbound lane, between Westover and Winsor roads.

One person on Reddit suggested that the tree be dubbed “MoPalm.” Not a bad idea.
