Bellmead junkyard busts another TCEQ cleanup deadline; city also cited
A Bellmead junkyard has blown past another deadline for a cleanup that state regulators ordered more than four years ago, and the city of Bellmead also has been cited for its part in the mess.
Kelleys Used Auto Parts at 2401 Bellmead Drive had until Wednesday to clean up junk, including about 2,000 tires, under an extension the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality agreed to last fall. A Jan. 12 inspection showed most of those tires were still there, and the TCEQ has not received documentation since then of further cleanup.
The junkyard now faces a variety of possible additional enforcement remedies that could include a new administrative order or referral to the Texas attorney general, who could seek court penalties, TCEQ spokesman Brian McGovern said. In addition to the $5,400 penalty it already has paid, the business also will have to pay $1,350 in penalties that were previously deferred.
Co-owner Beverly Kelley declined comment except to say that the business has been in contact with the TCEQ.
