Tricep pushups led Texas Woman's University volleyball students to hospitalization last fall
DENTON -- A new report by consulting firm Buckner revealed a series of 75 tricep pushups led eight Texas Woman's University volleyball players to seek treatment last summer at area hospitals for rhabdomyolysis.
The exercise, paired with dehydration and overexertion, led to the students developing rhabdo, a condition where the muscle tissue breaks down and begins to enter the bloodstream.
Monica Mendez-Grant, vice president for student life, said the university now will move forward by implementing 12 steps Buckner suggested with the final report. Before the report was released to the public Friday, Mendez-Grant spoke with the volleyball team.
"I apologized because I think it's important for the university to heal a little bit because it was a difficult process, and that apology helps us move forward," Mendez-Grant said. "I accepted responsibility for the activities that happened during those fitness tests ... and I offered my support to them."
