Study: oil and gas industry on the rise in South Texas

Although the Eagle Ford Shale’s economic impact bottomed out in 2016, recent evidence suggests the region’s oil and gas business is now on the rise.

The South Texas Energy and Economic Roundtable commissioned the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Center for Community and Business Research to complete a study of the Eagle Ford Shale, which was recently completed. Dr. Thomas Tunstall – the senior research director for CCBR and lead researcher of the study – shared its findings with industry leaders Wednesday at Corpus Christi’s Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz International Center.

Tunstall noted that the shale’s gross output peaked in 2014 at $123 billion.

“It has come down since then, but we’re still at very healthy levels,” Tunstall said.

Since 2014, gross output from the 21-county area fell to $80 billion in 2015 and then to $50 billion in 2016.
