Democratic Party chief: Joaquin Castro hasn't shut door on governor run

Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa said Thursday that U.S. Rep. Joaquín Castro never slammed the door shut on running for governor against Republican Greg Abbott in 2018, and he is one of a number of candidates who could emerge as the party’s nominee.

“He’s never ruled it out,” Hinojosa said of Castro, speaking to the American-Statesman.

Asked about a prospective run for governor, Castro said, “Well, I have a job right now, and my plan is to run for re-election.”

Castro spokesman Matthew Jones offered a “no comment” Thursday about the renewed speculation after The Dallas Morning News reported that Castro is among those considering running for governor.
