The design of the New Braunfels Avenue bridge will have to be redone after TxDOT officials say a shift during the concrete-drying process caused the arches to come out wonky.
Texas Department of Transportation officials are asking themselves "what in the heck happened" after the remodel of a San Antonio bridge resulted in a wonky design.
Officials began the process of replacing the New Braunfels Avenue overpass in 2016 and recently completed the first half of the bridge. That's when they noticed something was a bit off, they said in a TxDOT blog.
"The new bridge had everything sidewalks and decorative arches included," reads the post. "It looks... well, terrible."
Arched windows along the bridge are slanted, out of line, and too close together after a shift in concrete during the drying process.

(21,596 posts)I'm saying this as licensed professional who worked in the field of civil engineering for over 20 years. It's going to cost a lot to fix the bridge and it will not be an easy task.

(195 posts)After 50+ years in construction I now have seen a new one "shift" in concrete during the drying process????== Piss poor workmanship.

(2,050 posts)That's not a "drying" issue, if they pulled the forms too early which should never happen it would sluff off and be obvious.
That's flat out poor workmanship, they didn't secure the "arch" molds in the form.
Contractor mistake, plain and simple.

(2,050 posts)DURING THE POUR, not after, the mud pushed the forms out of place, kinda obvious after looking at the pic closer.
No voids between the arches, I wonder if they shifted during the pour ( most likely ) or when they wanded it?.
Damn that's sad.
