Four officers facing prison time in sexual misconduct scandal at state youth lockup
AUSTIN At least four former staff members at the Gainesville State School, including a woman allegedly pregnant with a youthful offender's child, are facing prison time amid allegations of sexual misconduct at the state lockup for troubled youths.
Since July, one former officer at the school has been convicted of improper sexual activity with a person in custody, two others have been arrested on similar charges and a fourth is expected to be arrested soon, according to an email the Texas Juvenile Justice Department sent Monday to lawmakers and legislative leaders.
The Dallas Morning News obtained a copy of the email, which the agency sent after questions by the newspaper regarding reports of sexual misconduct at the Gainesville youth lockup.
"The Texas Juvenile Justice Department takes its mandate to protect youths and communities very seriously, and has implemented new guidelines providing additional measures designed to ensure safety," TJJD Executive Director David Reilly said in a written statement. "The recent arrests of these juvenile correctional officers demonstrates that our reporting mechanisms, camera footage, and checks and balances are accomplishing what they were intended to accomplish."
