Candidates for governor Lupe Valdez, Andrew White spar over immigration, abortion in Austin debate

AUSTIN — Democratic gubernatorial hopefuls Lupe Valdez and Andrew White pounded one another over immigration and abortion Friday.

In their only head-to-head debate before the May 22 runoff election, with early voting starting Monday, White and Valdez wasted no time jabbing the other’s weak spot.

Valdez, the former Dallas County sheriff, has been under fire for being too accommodating of federal immigration authorities.

White jumped in, criticizing her jail management record as subpar when it came to handling illegal immigrants.
