Accused killer's attorney: 'They did not see this coming at all'

The day after a 17-year-old student was charged in Friday’s mass shooting at Santa Fe High School, the teen’s family is struggling to understand how the awful crimes with which he’s accused could have happened, a Kemah attorney said Saturday.

On Saturday evening, the family of Dimitrios Pagourtzis, of Alvin, released a statement through Nicholas Poehl’s office.

“We are as shocked and confused as anyone else by these events that occurred. We are gratified by the public comments made by other Santa Fe High School students that show Dimitri as we know him: a smart, quiet, sweet boy. While we remain mostly in the dark about the specifics of yesterday’s tragedy, what we have learned from media reports seems incompatible with the boy we love.”

The family asked for privacy, for themselves and the shooting victims, and said they were cooperating with authorities.
