It was a long, cold winter at least in Texas terms and thats good news for this years Hill Country peach harvest.
Unlike last year, the orchards got the chill hours necessary to nudge buds out of dormancy so they can blossom into Texas prized summer tree fruit. The spring came and went without the type of lingering late freeze that wiped out the regions crop five years ago. Whats more, the relatively dry weather meant natural sugars werent diluted by rain, making this years fruit exceptionally flavorful.
"We're really happy with the crop, it's really nice, really tasty," said grower Russ Studebaker. "Everybody's got plenty of peaches."
Hill Country peaches are prized thanks to the region's soils, said to be rich with mineral deposits from when the picturesque region was blanketed by an ancient sea.

(5,901 posts)Gillespie County produces 40% of all the peaches grown in the State of Texas. Roadside stands line many of the roads leading into Fredericksburg, with a major concentration along Highway 290 between Fredericksburg and Stonewall and along Highway 87 South. The peach season runs from mid-May through the first week of August in a normal year. Several orchards offer pick-your-own. The Hill Country Fruit Council produces a listing of its members in a brochure entitled Fredericksburg-Stonewall Peaches, which is normally available at the Fredericksburg Visitor Information Center or visit www.texaspeaches.com.
Fredericksburg is a German town where most natives learn German before English. If you like German food, this is the place. Enchanted Rock is close by. Adminal Nimitz was from Fredericksburg and his home is now a great WWII museum. And the peaches, oh the peaches!
