Democrats' big Denton County win turns black-and-blue as party faction rips newly elected state rep

AUSTIN -- Denton County Democrats should be celebrating.

For the first time in 34 years, they’ll have a Democrat in a Denton County Texas House seat. They also elected a Democratic justice of the peace - their first county office since 2004.

Sweetening the victory, the Republican incumbent they bounced in House District 65, Ron Simmons, authored that chamber’s version of the “bathroom bill” in 2017, doing a favor to Democrats across the state who considered the legislation discriminatory toward transgender people.

But the would-be celebration has turned into political infighting after members of the local Young Democrats chapter publicly blasted their newly elected state representative, Michelle Beckley, alleging that she made racially insensitive remarks and tried to undermine the election of two local candidates who were racial minorities.

"But this young activist claims you said something 'insensitive' so that means, unfortunately, we gotta heave you under this bus, mmmkay? Nothing personal though, it's strictly business. That's just the Democratic Party way."
