Frisco mayor says he'll return $15k in campaign donations from developer facing federal, state fraud charges

Frisco Mayor Jeff Cheney said late Tuesday he will return $15,000 in campaign donations from a developer who is accused in federal and state court of fraud.

Phillip Carter, also of Frisco, donated $10,000 to Cheney's campaign fund through his Carter Family Office LLC in May and $5,000 more in his own name in October -- about a month before the developer was arrested on state fraud charges.

Carter's attorney did not respond Tuesday to a request for comment regarding the accusations related to $17.5 million he raised from more than 100 investors, many of whom were elderly.

In a Facebook post, Cheney told Frisco residents that he decided to return the money as a result of an interview late Tuesday with Dallas Morning News metro columnist Sharon Grigsby, who reached out to the mayor earlier in the day after spotting the donations in his campaign-finance reports.
