Austin teachers, school staffers rally for 10% raises

Members of Education Austin, the Austin school district’s largest labor group, are demanding 10% across-the-board raises.

Outfitted in matching red t-shirts, a group of 30 teachers, bus drivers and other educators rallied Tuesday afternoon outside Travis High School, chanting “We are Worth It!” One held a sign that read, “Don’t Undervalue Me.”

The rally came just weeks before the Austin school board will vote on the district’s 2019-20 budget, expected to exceed $1.4 billion. One district budget proposal calls for a 1% raise for teachers only.

The labor group represents employees during consultation and pay negotiations with district administrators. Before the legislative session, group members advocated for 2% raises, but they said they are rescinding the ask in light of lawmakers prioritizing a boost in state funding for education, which likely will include pay raises.
