Why the Rio Grande Valley deserves a Level 1 Trauma Center

EDINBURG, RGV – Dr. Raúl Barreda, M.D., trauma medical director at DHR Health, has made the case for the Rio Grande Valley securing a Level 1 Trauma Center.

In May, DHR Health announced it is now functioning as a Level 1 Trauma Center. The institution believes it will secure the appropriate accreditation in the near future.

Also in May, the state Legislature approved a budget that includes $6 million to boost efforts to land a Level 1 Trauma Center in the Valley. That money will be distributed to the Valley by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

In this podcast, Dr. Barreda explains what a trauma center is, the differences between a Level 1 center and, say, a Level 2 or Level 3 center, and why having such a center is crucial to the Rio Grande Valley.
