11 grounds for Mineral Wells mayor's removal cited in recall petition

For the first time in nearly three decades, an effort is underway to recall a Mineral Wells City Council member – this one looking to remove Mayor Christopher Perricone from office.

An affidavit for recall election was filed Wednesday morning with City Clerk Peggy Clifton, laying out 11 grounds used for the basis of the recall petition. Clifton's acceptance of the affidavit put into motion the next step in the recall process, the gathering of just over 1,800 verified signatures of registered voters residing in the city. That is nearly 500 more signatures than total votes cast in the 2018 mayor's race.

Clifton said the petition has a return deadline of Aug. 30. Once submitted, Clifton has five days to verify the signatures. If validated, the city charter gives the targeted council person five days to resign, or council must set a date for a recall vote that has to take place in no less than 30 days, nor more than 60 days.

That would mean the election, if called, could not take place in conjunction with the statewide Nov. 5 election date. It also puts the election close to the six-month cutoff date that a recall election can not take place under the city's charter. The mayor's seat is up for election next May.
