Metro Tower renovation project huge for downtown Lubbock
The renovation and revitalization of downtown Lubbock has enjoyed significant traction recently, and another dose of welcome news hit the streets last weekend with the announcement that the citys tallest building is about to undergo a long-overdue transformation.
As many around here know, the 20-story structure born in 1955 as the Great Plains Life Building survived a devastating hit from the 1970 tornado. Some 13 floors of the building were rendered uninhabitable since that day as a result of the twister.
In the ensuing years, the structure at 1220 Broadway has come to be known as the NTS Building because of a local business headquartered there since 1997 and the Metro Tower. If all goes according to plan, it will soon be known as Metro Tower Lofts following the announcement by Kansas City-based MRE Capital and partner Structure Development of Austin in a deal brokered by WestMark Commercial. Their plan, according to our story over the weekend, is to renovate the building for residential use.
This is just the kind of major development downtown Lubbock needs. Project construction is set to begin later this year with an estimated finish in the fourth quarter of 2021. Add this huge revelation to work already going on with the Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences, Citizens Tower and The Cotton Court hotel as well as other lower-profile projects and its the makings of marked and measurable progress on Lubbocks downtown.
