Opposition to 'offensive' Refugio High School fight song continues
Dareon Wills is in an unusual position.
The Refugio High School senior is both a starter for the Bobcats football team and a member of the marching band.
That means he has had to play the schools contested fight song, Dixie, and also run out onto the field to it. And when he does either, he said, he feels shame.
As an eighth-grader, he learned about the origins of the song that it was written for a blackface minstrel show in the 1850s, and served as the unofficial anthem of the Confederacy.
The song is offensive to many people. Its offensive to me, Wills said in a message to the Caller-Times. I feel like a school is supposed to be there for all of the students and make us all feel safe and welcomed. But I guess thats not the case in this community.
