Hillstone Restaurant Group changes mask policy after backlash and lawsuit

After employee complaints, a lawsuit and mounting public pressure on social media, Hillstone Restaurant Group, which operates four popular Dallas-area high-end restaurants, has changed its policy on employees wearing face coverings at work.

The company, which operates 45 units nationally across a multitude of brands, came under fire after prohibiting its employees from abiding by CDC recommendations for wearing masks when it opened its dining rooms in Dallas and Addison.

An employee, later referred to as “Jane Doe” in a complaint, received a temporary restraining order on Friday, permitting her to return to work and wear a mask. Attorneys for Hillstone attempted to have the motion for the restraining order removed to a higher court, but later dropped the motion. An injunction is in place until May 20 when Judge Tonya Parker is expected to rule on the complaint.

Hillstone, which has not responded directly to The Dallas Morning News, changed wording on its website, indicating all employees were free to wear masks.

When people feel so bold and in control that they start playing with other people's health and safety as well as their lives, then that's a red line. They are no longer good businesses thriving in a community, they are harmful and potentially deadly profiteers who put revenue above and beyond the well being of their customers.

I am glad that reckless policy and behavior by that company was forced a change in policy, however I would suggest that people think twice about frequenting their establishments only because they may also be less concerned about the safety and quality of their food, etc., if that was any indication of their standards and level of concern for those they serve and their employees.

We need less toxic businesses.
