Lubbock council rejects proposed anti-abortion ordinance, likely sending it to voters
Lubbock's City Council voted unanimously to reject the sanctuary city for the unborn ordinance, likely sending the anti-abortion proposal to a public vote in an election next May.
The Tuesday night vote came after the council heard 5 1/2 hours of public comments that were overwhelmingly in favor of the ordinance promoted by Lubbock's state lawmakers and anti-abortion advocates.
Most council members emphasized their opposition to abortion, but cited concerns about the enforceability of the ordinance and its potential conflicts with state and federal law that were brought up by outside legal counsel.
"I also value life, but this ordinance, as I view it, is not enforceable," said Councilman Juan Chadis, recalling taking an oath to defend the Constitution and laws of the state when he became a councilmember. "My concern is if this ordinance were to pass, we as a city would be exposed to a costly legal battle."
