Texas teen blasts high school for 'double standard' after fingernail polish lands him in ISS

A Texas teenager is calling out his high school for actions he's deemed homophobic and sexist.

Clyde High School senior Trevor Wilkinson, 17, returned from Thanksgiving break with his finger nails painted, and he instantly received in-school suspension for violating the school's dress code.

"Imagine your school not allowing boys to paint their nails and giving boys ISS [in-school suspension] for it," he said in a Nov. 30 tweet. "And the whole administration being okay with it, homophobic and sexist? Welcome to West Texas."

Wilkinson launched a Change.org petition that same day, garnering more than 71,000 signatures and counting, saying he feels his school's actions are a complete double standard because girls are allowed to paint their nails.

1. Hard to imagine people worrying about nail polish while so much is going on in the world

I applaud him for not backing down. They need to get a grip. I'll be signing that petition!

And of all the things a 17 year old could be doing, wearing nail polish is completely harmless.

While I am not personally a fan of such nail polish, and I honestly find it a bit strange that a guy would wear this, I also just chalk it up to individual taste and preference, like pink hair or wearing certain kinds of clothing *I* find odd. My finding these things odd or strange is MY problem. It kind of comes down to, people should be allowed to do what they want, so long as they don't do it in the street and frighten the horses. And I'm guessing no horses were frightened by this young man's nail polish.

The only other thing to add is that I really, really hope his parents are supportive.

5. Hmm, when I was in school in the 80's the school tried to ban the boys from wearing shorts.

The next day at least half of the boys came dressed in mini skirts along with the girls. By the end of the day the announcement was made that boys could continue to wear shorts.

I never understood why the school did that. The girls wearing the mini skirts showed a lot more off than the boys wearing shorts.

6. I never wore shorts when I was in high school except for my PE class due to the dress code.

Band was the first class in the morning and there were times when we would have three or four inches of water on the practice field that we used to practiced our marching routines, but none of us wore shorts then either.

The most that anyone ever got away with at my high school was the one buxom lady that wore a T-shirt that said "Boy O Boy" with the "o's" in the first and last word placed exactly where her nipples were.

7. I have 4 rules regarding guys wearing shorts.

You may wear them if:

1) You are under 10 years old.

or

2) You are at the beach.

3) You are playing sport.

4) You are helping Montgomery chase down Rommel in the desert.

Otherwise - no shorts.

And so, as none of those apply to me - no shorts.

Should be number 5. I own exactly 2 pairs of long pants. They are for weddings, funerals, and travel.

I live in the south of France - Lots of guys here wear shorts and some wear the clothing abomination known as 'manpris'.
I've gone the linen trousers route in the summer, because the whiteness of my legs frightens people.

Having said that, banning shorts for men or boys is ludicrous. Shorts are a perfect fashion choice for warm days. Just don't wear black socks. In fact, ban wearing black socks with shorts.

At one point we used the Houston Oilers blue, then we went to powder puff blue (which obviously did not intimidate our opponents). I believe that they have stuck with royal blue for a few decades.
