Texas teachers, child care workers now eligible for COVID-19 vaccine, health officials say
Most school and child care workers in Texas are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, state health officials announced Wednesday.
Texas has lagged behind other states in expanding vaccinations to school teachers, and the state's move to do so comes roughly three months after those 65 and older or with certain health conditions were added to the list of eligible Texans.
State health officials said the decision came after the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Tuesday expanded vaccine eligibility to include school workers.
The federal directive called on states to expand vaccination efforts to those who work in pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools, as well as Head Start and Early Head Start programs (including teachers, staff, and bus drivers) and those who work as or for licensed child care providers, including center-based and family care providers.
