Pantex highlights recycling efforts during Earth Day

With Earth Day being Thursday, officials with the Pantex Plant recently released information on its recycling efforts, as well as its reduction of waste.

According to a news release, millions of pounds of waste were recycled at Pantex in 2020. This includes more than 814,000 pounds of scrap metal, almost 37 tons of batteries, more than 22,000 pounds of computer and electronic equipment, 30,000 pounds of engine oil, about 1.5 tons of fluorescent lamps, more than 95,000 pounds of cardboard, about 48,000 pounds of paper, more than 3 tons of plastic, and 29,000 pounds of tires and rubber. This totals more than 1.26 million pounds of material.

Along with its recycling efforts, Pantex has resurfaced almost 20 miles of its 60 miles of roads with 4.9 million pounds of recycled concrete and asphalt.

On the environmental side, clean-up efforts continue to remove contaminants from ammunition production of more than 75 years ago, with almost almost 15,000 pounds of contaminants removed, along with 10 tons of solvents, by a soil vapor extraction system. Water recycling has been in effect since 2005 and the facility has reduced its use of electricity when items are not in use, the release states.
