Lieutenant governor hopeful Mike Collier visits Laredo
Mike Collier, a Texas Democrat who has twice run for lieutenant governor, is testing the waters for a third run. He has made up his mind to run again in 2022, but for the next two months he will be traveling across the state to meet with the local Democratic Parties and make sure they support his candidacy.
Last Thursday, Collier met with around 10 members of the Webb County Democratic Party at their headquarters in north Laredo.
One of the central points of discussion was that the party lost ground on the border last year. President Joe Biden won in Webb County, but with only 61% of the vote; in 2016, Hillary Clinton won 74% of the vote. Zapata County, which had no Republican Party, flipped red in 2020.
Webb County Democratic Party Chair Sylvia Bruni said in hindsight, they had no message. Over 30% of Webb County lives under the poverty line, but they never talked about economics. And while their partys strategy was to eschew door-knocking in light of the pandemic, the Republican Party was extremely visible in Laredo last year.
