House Democrats torpedo bill allowing Lost Creek to leave Austin
Using a parliamentary challenge as the Texas House was churning through legislation early Friday, Democrats sank a bill that would have allowed the Lost Creek neighborhood to leave Austin by holding a disannexation election later this year.
The successful point of order about 1:40 a.m. came roughly 11 hours after a similar Democratic challenge halted a planned vote on Senate Bill 659, which would have let several hundred property owners along Lake Austin secede from Austin.
When SB 1499 came up for a vote on Lost Creek's future, Rep. Vikki Goodwin, D-Austin, was ready with her point of order but found Rep. Ben Leman, R-Anderson, occupying the back microphone to ask questions about the bill.
Undeterred, Goodwin pulled the microphone off its stand to raise her point of order, drawing protests from Leman.
