by Patrick Svitek, Texas TribuneAllen Wests final days as Texas GOP chair are ending with an explosion of the kind of intraparty drama he has become known for throughout his tenure.
On Wednesday, long-simmering tensions between West and the partys vice chair, Cat Parks, boiled over as he called her a cancer and delusional and apparently deranged amid a dispute over a party committee project. Parks is a cancer survivor.
A day earlier, a group of county party chairs called for Wests immediate removal as state party leader, alleging an outrageous conflict of interest given that he is now running for governor. West announced last month that he was stepping down as Texas GOP chair, but it is not effective until Sunday, when the State Republican Executive Committee is set to elect his successor.
The closing episodes of his chairmanship reflect the sharp-elbowed style West has used in leading the Republican Party in the countrys biggest red state and how it is likely to follow him as he embarks on his campaign for the Governors Mansion.

(21,548 posts)West is an undistinguished former Congressman from Florida with a dismal record and quazy policy ideas. He is best known for spouting lunacy, insulting everyone he can, and holding a gun to a child's head.
And the Texas GOP says "Come on in and screw us, too!"

(107,111 posts)Even for a pol known for chaos and controversy, Allen West had a doozy of a first week as a Texas gubernatorial candidate.
Top state Republicans called on him to quit his post immediately as state GOP chair Tuesday, citing a conflict of interest with his campaign (he refused). He called the partys vice chair a cancer on Wednesday (shes a cancer survivor). Then West committed a Texas-sized error by heading Friday to Alaska for a joint Texas-Alaska GOP fundraiser bearing a title that strikes at Lone Star pride: THE HEART OF ALASKA IS BIGGER THAN TEXAS.
Wests bid for governor is a long shot: He moved to Texas only in early 2015 after serving a single term as a Florida tea party congressman. Gov. Greg Abbott appears to be in solid shape, with high approval ratings among GOP primary voters and a stunning $55 million in the bank.
But with his no-holds-barred style, West stands to complicate Abbotts reelection campaign which some Republicans view as a precursor to a 2024 presidential bid by the governor.
