El Paso City Council votes to challenge Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on mask mandate ban
A public mask mandate may be coming back to the city of El Paso.
El Paso City Council voted in a Monday emergency meeting to allow the city attorney's office to sue Texas Governor Greg Abbott's office over the executive order limiting local government's response to COVID-19, including enforcing mask mandates.
Dr. Hector Ocaranza, the city/county health authority, said a mask mandate could go in effect in as soon as Wednesday morning.
Masks would be required in indoor settings including businesses and public schools. The mandate would be in effect for 30 days and then reevaluated before deciding on whether to reissue another mandate.
City representatives passed the vote, 5-3. Reps. Joe Molinar, Isabel Salcido and Claudia Lizette Rodriguez voted against the measure, while Peter Svarzbein, Alexsandra Annello, Cassandra Hernandez, Henry Rivera and Cissy Lizarraga voted in favor.
