Fort Worth seeks residents' input on saltwater disposal wells

FORT WORTH -- As the city continues to deal with the impact of the Barnett Shale, it is still wrestling with whether it should allow saltwater disposal wells inside the city limits.

The roughly 3 million to 5 million gallons of wastewater used in the hydraulic fracturing of a well is currently trucked to sites outside of the city limits and then injected back into the ground. The wastewater can contain chemicals and contaminants.

City officials have said trucking that wastewater outside the city is taking a toll on city streets, and it often is hauled just outside the city limits, where it is disposed close to Fort Worth subdivisions.

The council extended the moratorium for another six months in October to determine whether to keep or lift the prohibition.

In West Texas. In the A.F. Cowden Field. What sweet water it was when I grew up. I left home, and after a few years of secondary recovery, salt became caked all over the faucets and collected in the flower beds. Clothes were hard to wash and soap didn't bubble.
