Newton, Orange counties again devastated by tornado

DEWEYVILLE — Deweyville resident Tommy Spears was sitting at home when he received a phone call from his friend Wednesday morning.

“He called and told me there was a tornado headed our way, and we better be prepared,” Spears said. “And low and behold, his neighborhood took a big hit.”

While Spears was spared, other homes in his Deweyville community were not.

Newton County Assistant Emergency Management Coordinator Olen Bean reported significant damage in the Sandy Oaks Subdivision, which sits south of the intersection of Texas 12 and U.S. 87, near the Orange County line.
