Perry will end presidential bid and endorse Gingrich

Gov. Rick Perry will end his presidential campaign today, the American-Statesman has confirmed from two Perry sources. He will endorse former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Perry has called a press conference for 11 a.m. Eastern time to announce his decision.

After poor finishes in Iowa and New Hampshire, polls have shown Perry heading for another poor finish in the South Carolina primary on Saturday. Dropping out now allows him to avoid that embarrassment and skip tonight’s GOP debate.

An NBC/Marist poll conducted in South Carolina on Monday and Tuesday showed Perry in fifth place with support from just 4 percent of respondents.

Perry has been facing calls to drop out so that conservatives who are unhappy with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney could rally behind one candidate.

Rick Perry To Drop Out Of 2012 Presidential Race Ahead Of South Carolina Primary

Texas Gov. Rick Perry will drop out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday ahead of South Carolina's primary election, CNN reports.

Jeff Zeleny at the New York Times confirms the news.

Perry is expected to address his decision to abandon his campaign at a press conference in North Charleston, S.C. at 11 a.m. ET.

On the heels of a disappointing fifth-place finish in the 2012 Iowa caucus, Perry said he was heading back to Texas to reassess his bid for the White House. The Wednesday after the Jan. 3 event, Perry wrote in a tweet, "And the next leg of the marathon is the Palmetto State... Here we come South Carolina!!!"

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Gov. Rick Perry will end his bid for the White House today.

A news conference has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Central time.

The decision comes a day after spokesmen defiantly said that Perry was "in it to win it" and called talk of a surrender "nuts." Perry made the decision overnight and informed top aides Thursday morning.

Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich in 1999 asked his second wife for an “open marriage” or a divorce at the same time he was giving speeches around the country on family and religious values, his former wife, Marianne, told The Washington Post on Thursday.

Marianne Gingrich said she first heard from the former speaker about the divorce request as she was waiting in the home of her mother on May 11, 1999, her mother’s 84th birthday. Over the phone, as she was having dinner with her mother, Newt Gingrich said, “I want a divorce.”

Shocked, Marianne Gingrich replied: “Is there anybody else?” she recalled. “He was quiet. Within two seconds, when he didn’t immediately answer, I knew.”

8. Good. A Pity We Can't Recall Him.

I'm delighted to see Rick Perry's presidential bid expire. I hoped that he'd last longer and bleed more money but I'm glad he lost.

It's a pity we can't do to Rick Perry what Wisconsin voters look likely to do to Scott Walker. When the tide finally turns, I think that we Texans ought to have recall provisions in a future state constitution.

The voters of Texas have to wake up first though. They are totally responsible for this national embarrassment. They continued to re-elect this idiot.

It's so hard to amend our state constitution - even for a good thing. But I'll keep hope right there with you.

My only concern is what "legacy" he decides to leave behind for the state over the next two years.

13. He could start cleaning up his legacy by resigning

The only way Rick Perry helps Texas is to get the hell out of the way. His political career is over - so why not step aside? He's never been anything but interested in himself. Texas has serious problems and the only way we deal with them is to have a new leader willing to work hard to deal with them. That isn't Perry.

Perry doesn't like hard work and neither do the two dozen or so Senators and Legislators who just cut and ran from the Lege. We're going to have to deal with the worst financial crisis ever in Texas and the worst drought economy in the next session. And it won't be fun.

Perry should just step aside and let someone else start from scratch.
