'Damn selfish and dangerous': Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich on opponents of voting rights bills

Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich took on the blocked voting rights bill before the Spurs took on the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday, January 23. The voting rights package pushed by President Joe Biden and Democrats would safeguard poll practices that have come under threat after the 2021 election making voting access more difficult in minority communities.

Popovich is one of the most well-known coaches for building champion-caliber athletes, as well as his willingness to use his platform to bring attention to hot-button issues. The bill was no different. According to the San Antonio Express-News, the coach used a pregame question about Juneteenth becoming a national holiday to share rebuke for Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema and her West Virginia counterpart Joe Manchin for upholding the filibuster on Wednesday, January 19.

"As many have said, it’s been time, it’s past time for hardball,” Popovich told reporters, according to the San Antonio Express-News. "The Republican Senate will just not participate, they just will not. So, whatever can be done needs to be done. And Sinema and Manchin they get it, but they don’t get it. They know what’s going on. They understand. But there are more important things to them, and it’s damn selfish and dangerous to our country."

"But it's like we don’t get it," Pop went on to say. "It’s like, maybe there wouldn’t be a democracy if it wasn’t for Black people."
