Democrats launch battle to turn Texas blue

Turning Texas blue is the goal of Battleground Texas. It launched a nationwide effort to flip decades of Republican landslides.

"Battleground Texas is going to work in every area of Texas, all 254 counties, in some way," Lubbock County Democratic Party Chair Kenny Ketner said. "And it's going to be different in each area. You know, no two places in Texas are exactly alike, and the political atmosphere in each is different. So, it's going to require different strategies, but the commitment is there, the man power is there, and the money will be there."

Ketner has joined the fight. He's met with leaders of Battleground Texas. He said raking in the Hispanic vote is the key to a Democratic majority.

"The Hispanic vote is extremely important, and they vote 70 percent Democratic," Ketner said. "But demographics are not destiny, and we can't just count on that being there. We've got to get out there and engage the Hispanic vote, and explain why the Democratic party is the best fit, and communicate with them regularly so that they do turn out and vote."

"We're going to reach out to those voters," County GOP Chair Carl Tepper said. "We believe they should be on the Republican side. We know that they're self-reliant, we know that they're people of faith, we know that they're people of character and values, and we have no idea why they would be trending Democrat."

Tepper said the ongoing demographic shift makes it harder for the Republican party. He's met with the state's other Republican leaders, and they're doing what they can to combat the changes.

"The Republican party of Texas comes in with some demographic information, some things that we need to be doing, the Hispanic outreach," Tepper said. "There's a large Hispanic Republican club that we've started here in Lubbock county, and it's growing exponentially, and we're very excited about it. We're also reaching out to young people. We've got high school Republicans, young Republicans, the college Republicans is very strong and getting stronger. So, we're seeing a trending of young people, which we need to capture to make sure the state of Texas stays red."
