Rail Company Tells Cities It Can't Afford Texas State Railroad

The historic Texas State Railroad appears to be losing steam as financial burdens threaten to derail operations.

Colorado-based American Heritage Railways, the company operating the line, reached out in recent days to city leaders in Palestine and Rusk, asking for financial relief and assistance, local officials said.

American Heritage "has indicated that they do not have enough operating capital to sustain them to this year's Polar Express, and without capital to sustain them, they are considering ceasing operations," Palestine City Manager Mike Ohrt said Friday.

Ohrt said American Heritage representatives indicated the company needs a little more than $500,000 to make ends meet for the duration of the year.
