Vermont exempts vehicles older than 16 years from emissions test
Vehicles older than 16 years in Vermont are no longer required to undergo computer-based emissions inspections.
The exemption took effect June 14 as part of a suite of transportation laws passed by the Legislature this year. The Department of Motor Vehicles filed proposed rules to formally adopt the change in late August.
All vehicles are required to have emissions systems visually inspected. But only newer vehicles model year 2004 or newer are required to have an on-board diagnostic test.
After the state upgraded its vehicle inspection system, legislators raised concerns about Vermonters struggling to pay for emissions repairs for older vehicles. Many new vehicles' emissions systems are under warranty.
