Some state employees stay on paid leave long after investigation

Some Vermont state employees who are investigated for misconduct remain on paid leave long after the investigations are completed, according to new reports from State Auditor Doug Hoffer.

Hoffer's office reviewed 55 misconduct investigations within the Agency of Human Services from 2014 to 2016 and another 70 investigations in other parts of state government.

Vermont has no unpaid leave option for classified employees, according to documents included in the review. Employees are placed on relief from duty status and continue to receive salary and benefits while they are being investigated.

The auditor's review found that some employees remain on leave at taxpayer expense for weeks, or even months, after the investigations are completed.
