(34,300 posts)Evil considerably worse than the other. We must support McAuliffe with our votes this fall IMHO.

Go vote for a Republican if you'd like. Don't cry when you get what you get.

(135,425 posts)After all, that was the OP topic. A candidate, and his issues.
Your response focused on ME and your "suspicions" about my attitude towards YOU.
See how that kind of thing ruins good conversation?

(135,425 posts)"Virginia is for Haters" is how the state treats gay people. There's a pushback campaign for equal rights that is centered around that theme.
It had nothing to do with you--it had everything to do with VA's policy on equality.

Is Virginia for Haters?
By THOMAS B. EDSALL
....Virginia is a state moving steadily from red to purple from reliably Republican to presidential battleground. Republican activists with majority control of the state Party nominating process have come down with a vengeance on the side of the hard right.
At the May 17-18 Virginia Republican Party convention, the nomination of Cuccinelli, the Rev. E. W. Jackson for lieutenant governor, and State Senator Mark D. Obenshain for attorney general amounted to a declaration of no retreat from conservative orthodoxy, a thumb in the eye of the establishment.
This is the most conservative Republican ticket in the history of Virginia, Larry Sabato, a political scientist at the University of Virginia, told me in a telephone interview.
On the Democratic side, the Virginia election will be the first off-year test of Obama campaign techniques without Obama actually on the ballot. It will help determine whether the deployment of innovative microtechnology, data analysis and IT-enhanced voter lists, combined with a large network of volunteers to boost turnout, can be successfully replicated under very different and more adverse circumstances.
McAuliffe has hired technology and turn-out staff from the Obama campaign, and he has also acquired that campaigns 2012 Virginia voter files, including names of local organizers and neighborhood volunteers, information that proved critical to Obamas victory last year....

(That's worth a look...)
I wasn't calling you a 'hater.' That's not how I roll, ever--and particularly to a DUer. I was calling the state's policy on equality hateful.

(6,819 posts)Please remember the 2000 Presidential race. Thousands of voters in some swing states thought Gore was not quite liberal enough. The end result was that we had My Pet Goat while the US was being attacked, a useless war in Iraq, trillions of unnecessary debt, Dick Cheney being the powerful person in the World, and a world economy that went down the crapper.
Instead, we could have had the most pro-environment President in US history.
If the Republican candidate was a reasonable moderate, then Terry's personality might come into play. However, Cucci is an ultra-conservative homophobe who wants to drag Virginia back into the 19th Century. His Lt. Guv literally believes that a Democrat cannot possibly be a Christian.

Our first governor was Patrick Henry. Our second was Thomas Jefferson (who detested Patrick Henry, for Henry's attempt to make Virginia taxpayers pay the salaries of clergymen).
How did it come to this?
By Paul Schwartzman
On an otherwise serene Sunday recently, Virginias gubernatorial candidates were embroiled in the kind of needling and jabbing that is defining their race to lead the commonwealth.
The subject: whether Democrat Terry McAuliffe proved that hes masquerading as a Virginian when he said a highway along the southern edge of the state Route 58 needs to be widened to four lanes.
....
Even by the standards of modern political combat, the race to succeed Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) is an ugly contest between two candidates who are devoting vast resources to disparaging each other as unsuited for the job.
....
Time magazine proclaimed the race The Dirtiest, Nastiest, Low-Down Campaign in America, one that has drawn comparisons to the polarization of the U.S. Congress and the 2012 presidential contest.
The Dirtiest, Nastiest, Low-Down Campaign in America? There's always this:
