10-21-1967 (cutline): Mark Thacker of Ocean City, Md., a freshman at Richmond Professional Institute, leaps a hurble in a contest for the RPI skateboard championship Sunday. Thacker finished second in the competition between approximately a dozen students. Tom Tate of Richmond, a senior, finished first, and Stewart Wright of Mechanicsville, another senior, finished third. The contest, held according to U.S. Skateboard Association rules, included required and free-style maneuvers.

08-11-1976 (cutline): The corner of Glendale Drive and Henrico Avenue in western Henrico County looks like the scene of a skateboarding championship. Doing handstands yesterday are (from left) Robert Rice, Bill Robertson, Rusty Hamilton and Kenny Rice. Boys in the neighborhood have practiced their art of handstands, front wheelies, back wheelies and other stunts throughout the summer and hope to be able to enter future tournaments.

09-13-1987 (cutline): Robby Dodge used a wooden ramp to show off his best airborne skateboard moves yesterday during the Skate Jam in Brandermill's Market Square shopping center. The competition sponsored by the Skate Scene drew about 50 of the area's sidewalk surfers who competed in several categories, including the freestyle.
