Trammell supports compromise in congressional bid.
Jack Trammell values evolution in the political process. Democratic nominee in the 7th District congressional race, the 50-year-old college professor is not afraid to change his mind.
"The people we need elected to Congress should be people of core principles - and I have core principles - but they also need to be people who react to the world as it evolves," Trammell said. "We need people who cannot be dogmatic, but ... be able to adapt ... because it's changing so rapidly."
The candidate borrowed from history in making his point, saying that fourth U.S. President James Madison a lifelong Orange resident who represented much of this area in Congress switched positions on the debate over creating a Bank of the United States. Madison was against it as a congressman, but then supported it later during his presidency.
In today's culture, people might say Madison flip-flopped or that he was inconsistent, Trammell said, while he would characterize the switch in position as adapting to the times. The congressional candidate said he is better suited to represent today's 7th district due, in part, to disposition.
