Rocket Launch From NASA's Wallops May Be Visible In D.C.

Sarah Anne Hughes in News on Oct 27, 2014 10:00 am

The launch of the Antares rocket from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia may be visible in D.C. this evening.

Orbital Sciences’ rocket — which "will carry Orbital’s Cygnus cargo spacecraft, loaded with some 5,000 pounds of supplies and experiments, to the International Space Station" — is scheduled to launch at 6:45 p.m. today. Weather permitting, D.C. should be able to see the rocket approximately 180 seconds after launch. Coverage of the mission begins at noon and will be live-streamed here.

ETA, just before noon, additional links and maps.

ETA at 3:42, as a coworker says the space station will be visible too. You'll need to supply your latitude and longitude to get the right time. For Alexandria, try this:

NASA Will Try Again Tonight To Launch Rocket From Wallops Island

... NASA is trying again tonight, at 6:22 p.m. The ten-minute launch window will live-streamed on NASA TV beginning at 5:30 p.m. And if you're worried about not being able to see it, fear not, NASA says the weather forecast for tonight was "95 percent favorable" for getting a clear view of the rocket in D.C.

How to View Oct. 28′s Antares Launch

NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility and Virginia’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport are set to support the launch of Orbital Sciences’ Antares rocket at 6:22 p.m. EDT today, Oct. 28. Launch coverage on NASA TV will begin at 5:30 p.m. Monday’s launch attempt was scrubbed because of a boat down range in the trajectory Antares would have flown had it lifted off.
