NRA spends $1 million on ads in Virginia presidential contest
The National Rifle Association has pumped more than $1 million in ads into the presidential race in Virginia in an effort to boost Republican Donald Trumps campaign against Democrat Hillary Clinton.
The NRAs ad buys this fall in the Hampton Roads, Richmond and Roanoke TV markets more than double what the gun rights group spent four years ago when President Barack Obama was re-elected against Republican Mitt Romney.
In September the NRA started running an ad called Nightstand on national cable TV and regionally in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia.
The ad features a woman who gets out of bed when she hears an intruder. The announcer says the average police response time is 11 minutes and asserts that if Hillary Clinton were president the woman could be left with only her phone for protection.
