Navy investigating use of Trump campaign flag by Virginia Beach-based special warfare unit
VIRGINIA BEACH -- The Navy is investigating the use of a Donald Trump campaign flag by the lead vehicle in a military convoy comprised of a Virginia Beach-based special warfare unit, a Navy spokeswoman said Thursday.
Lt. Jacqui Maxwell, a spokeswoman for Naval Special Warfare Group 2, said that a unit was photographed and digitally recorded flying a Trump flag from the back of a Humvee on Sunday near Fort Knox, Ky., where the unit was training.
Throughout the heated election season, the Navy repeatedly warned sailors against appearing to endorse a political candidate in an official capacity. Images of the blue flag attached to an antenna of the vehicle were widely shared on social media as news outlets in Kentucky tried to determine where the vehicles were based.
The Lexington Herald-Leader reported that one of the videos was shot by a Shepherdsville, Ky., man while he was driving on Interstate 65 on his way to pick up feed for his goat farm.
