Chesapeake woman buys 1868 Bible for $5, researches its history and is now sending it "home"

For about 30 years, Patricia Shapowal has been shopping at yard sales, frequenting estate sales and combing antique shops in search of the obscure treasure that will perhaps propel her into early retirement.

She often finds herself irresistibly drawn to objects that may have a history or a story to tell.

That’s how the Greenbrier resident felt when she spied an old family Bible at an estate sale in Virginia Beach last fall.

“Five dollars. Why not? It could be worth something,” Shapowal, 57, thought, even though she didn’t even open it before her purchase.
