I don't know Northam as much, but both of them answered questions well. They are both well spoken.

I just want to continue to have a Democratic governor.

ETA: Northam "sounds" like someone from around my area - which is so red - and he graduated from VMI, which will be helpful in certain areas of Virginia.

I think I'm leaning Perriello, but I could easily support Northam.

I'll be absolutely proud to vote for either of our candidates, and I really hope the other one finds an office to run for after.

Hubby is supporting him. And Bernie is also.

I know and greatly respect Dr. Northam even tho he took funding from Virginia Power. Hmmm...so, it's a tough call for me.
(He was my son's consulting physician 22 yrs ago.)

Who are you folks supporting for Lieutenant Governor? I've not studied these candidates, therefore have no clue. So, HELP.

The better of the two. Having a doctor as Governor helps with the health care debate or debacle the GOP is preparing.

Email this morning:

"Dominion Power is hoping (read: demanding) its 76,000 employees hit the streets this weekend to turn out voters for anyone other than Tom Perriello. Defeating him is that important for the coal-fired monopoly.

Can you match that to show that our movement is more powerful than the fossil fuel industry?

Can you take some time this weekend at your nearest field office to volunteer in person or make some calls for Tom Perriello?"

I'm torn.

I drove through Waynesboro and Nelson County yesterday, and saw lots of Perriello signs due to his stance against Dominion Power and the pipeline.

I'm going to look for polling for each candidate vs. Gillespie and if Perriello is strong, I'll back him, I think.

13. Democrats bet on Trump in Virginia governor's race

Behind it all is the one supporting character common to both campaigns: President Donald Trump.

By KEVIN ROBILLARD 06/11/2017 06:56 AM EDT

Virginia’s Democratic primary on Tuesday is shaping up to be the first real test of liberalism in the Trump era, with both candidates lurching for increasingly leftward policies to position themselves in contrast with President Donald Trump.

Lt. Gov Ralph Northam has used TV ads to call Trump a “narcissistic maniac.” Former Rep. Tom Perriello has proclaimed Trump is an “authoritarian.” Both candidates have taken decidedly liberal positions on abortion, guns, criminal justice and college tuition — while using Trump bashing as a foundation of their campaigns. While Northam has the support of the Democratic establishment throughout Virginia and Perriello brings a potent Bernie Sanders endorsement to the Tuesday primary, the simmering question for the winner is how this race to the left in the Democratic primary — which may appeal to Northern Virginia Democrats — will play across the rest of the state in the general election.

Virginia's gubernatorial elections often develop into contrasts with a new president, but there's a stark difference between now and how Republican candidate Bob McDonnell handled then-President Barack Obama in 2009. While critical of the Obama's economic record, the future governor also regularly praised Obama for supporting school choice, straddling the partisan divide.

The Democrats have felt no need to do the same with the less popular Trump, whose approval rating was at 36 percent in a recent Washington Post-George Mason University poll of Virginia.
