Anyone go to Concerts at U-Hall in Charlottesville back in the day?

It’s never the right time to say goodbye, but loyal patrons of the University of Virginia’s iconic, clamshell-roofed venue with notoriously bad sound quality don’t have much longer—the dumping of more than 40 years’ worth of stuff from University Hall has begun, with a complete demolition scheduled by 2020. To help you grieve, here’s a look back at some of the basketball stadium and concert hall’s greatest—and not-so-great—hits.

1965: It opens as the home court of the university’s men’s and women’s basketball teams.

1969: Janis Joplin rocks U-Hall, but trash talks some stage crashers in an after-performance interview with the Cavalier Daily. “That tonight wasn’t natural,” she says.

1971: The Faces grace the stage, fronted by Rod Stewart, who was then accompanied by guitarist Ron Wood—who later became a member of the Rolling Stones.

1. Regarding Small Faces, two years earlier you'd have seen them with Steve Marriott who it was....

that took Rod Steward and Ron Wood to replace when he went to Humble Pie.

Jebus. My dad at my age was talking about Korea over beers quietly with a couple of buddies. I'm a Viet Vet and I'm toking quietly while tapping away on a lap-top about shows from the sixty and seventies.

U-Hall I never made it to, though I did see a festival somewhere near a horse track(?) near Charleston and saw Humble Pie, J. Giels, Black Oak, poop - I forget the fourth band. Around 73-74 after I got out of the Navy. Regrew my hair and resumed my life. I'm a little fuzzy about a couple of things. Like who the heck was that fourth band? Pie headlined.......

2. Of their list I only saw Joplin there.

Terrible acoustics there. I saw one where I managed to get a third row seat on the side. Directly in front of the speaker stack which helped drown out the echos. I think that was a Peter Paul and Mary concert in 69 or so.

I much preferred the acoustics (and freedoms) of the outdoor gigs.

I saw J. Giels Band and Black Oak around that same time you did at an outdoor event. Pie might of been the main act. I think we were on a road trip to Florida, but those times are a bit fuzzy in my memory too. Actually very fuzzy.

We went down to Richmond a lot and walked into the Mosque's back door as stage security. Walkie-talkies, flashlights and an attitude worked well in those days. They actually put us to work from time to time. I got to have a nice chat with Freddie King one day. He was sitting around bored.

I have worked directly in the sound and lighting end of events for the last decade and a half and was involved much longer less directly. When manufacturing Jobs went away here in the early 2000s, I started pushing road cases and running gear for my walking around money. My sister wanted to know if I had achieved a lifetime goal in my old age by being a Roadie. She was kidding, but I had to explain that Roadies didn't get to mix the shows and had to do the same thing over and over in different places. Life deals you different hands and you play 'em.
